Hate to Say "I Told Ya So..."

It didn't even take 24 hours from Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court for my prediction of an about-face on the part of right-wingnuts to take place. When Miers was nominated, James Dobson defended her on the basis of her ideological stance: "When you know some of the things that I know -- that I probably shouldn't know -- you will understand," he told his so-called "Christian" followers, and then spent most of the rest of his time trying to assure them that she really was dedicated to the agenda of overturning Roe. Then, yesterday, on the same day as the Scalito nomination, he issued this lovely press release in which he says Alito "has demonstrated that he understands the role of the judiciary is to interpret existing law in light of the Constitution, not make new law in service to a personal political agenda." Geez, Jim, I hope you were wearing a neck brace before you did that 180. Yes, the right wing will be back on its "strict constructionist" kick, pretending that they were there all along. (Incidentally, as Joshua Holland explains in very eloquent terms, "strict constructionist" doesn't mean "anti-abortion" and it tends to be the "conservative" judges who are the real "judicial activists.") Expect more right-wing hypocrisy in coming days . . . oh, the fun never stops! |
