| What are blogs? |
| "Blogs" (the now-preferred term for "weblogs") are essentially electronic journals that are accessible on the world wide web. Blogs come in many forms: some are nothing more than personal musings (almost like a diary that anyone who wants can read), others are journals of daily life intended to allow the blogger's family and friends know what's going on, others are journalistic in nature (either as "reporter's notes" or de facto columns), and others are entirely different animals altogether. Whatever type of blog you have, it's welcome at GLOAMING.us. |

| All blogs at GLOAMING.us are absolutely free of charge. |
| How do I sign up for a blog? |
| To start a blog at GLOAMING.us you will first need to create an account. Once you've done that (and validated your account, of course) simply log in, select "Blogs" from the main menu, and then click on "Post." It's that simple. |
| What rules apply to blogs at GLOAMING.us? |
The rules for GLOAMING.us blogs are similar to the rules for the discussions forums. However, bloggers are given a bit more latitude in their blogs (which are intended to be personal thoughts, after all, and not actual interactive discussions) than is permitted in the the discussion forums. We do require, however, that bloggers follow some basic rules:
- No defamation. If you're going to assert something about someone, understand that you will be held accountable for it. By posting a blog at this site, you agree that you are the author of the material, that you are solely responsible for its content, and you agree to indemnify and hold harmless all others (including but not limited to the site's owners, management, and users) for any losses incurred as the result of your posts.
- Be prepared to back up what you say with verifiable references. Again, even though it's a blog, if you state a fact we want to be able to verify it. (This isn't the Drudge Report; we want to deal with facts and not innuendo.) If you refuse to reveal a source for your information within a reasonable period when asked, the offending post may be deleted and/or you may be banned from this community. (If you just made it up, of course, "I made it up" is enough; we just want to make sure readers have a fair chance to judge the credibility of any "fact sources".)
- Be respectful of other users. Don't be intentionally inflammatory, offensive, or participate in flamebaiting. Unlike the discusson forums, bloggers are allowed some freedom to use "pet names"--"Bill Klinton," "Billary," "Al Bore," "Nutcase Rifle Association"--as long as they are within reason and do not cross the line into defamation or hate speech. GLOAMING.us does not welcome content that advocates or attempts to justify harassment, violence, or discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other classification. The owners and management of this site retain all right to delete and ban such content. Such decisions are final.
- SPAMMING OF THIS SYSTEM IN ANY WAY IS NOT TOLERATED. If you have a website you want to promote, that's great. You can post it in our links area or purchase a banner ad, assuming, of course, that the site and the content of your ad copy is consistent with the image, mission, and atmosphere of this site. Messages and other content judged to be spam will be instantly deleted without mercy, and users who spam this site will be subject to sanctions up to and including a permanent ban. Incidentally, if you're thinking of spamming this system, you should be aware of at least the following two things:
- We have our robots.txt file set to disallow web spiders from following links to our blogs, so spamming this site with comments or trackbacks in an attempt to raise your search profile will do absolutely no good here.
- Many forms of spam qualify under the criminal codes of many states as the unauthorized access of and/or tampering with electronic systems. This is a felony. We have an attorney on staff. He specializes in both telecommunications consumer protection law and criminal law. He's very, very good at what he does. And we will unleash him on you like a rabid pit bull in heat if we catch you. We're not kidding about this.

| What are the guidelines for content in the GLOAMING.us blogs? |
At GLOAMING.us, we are strong proponents of the idea of free speech. However, we have to balance the interests of our members with these concerns. As such, we have decided that our policy will be that members should simply use common sense when posting, both in the discusson forums and in the blogs. This is a public forum that anyone can join, from young children to post-octogenarians. We do, therefore, ask that unnecessary profanity be avoided. We also prohibit certain types of images, usernames, messages, links, files, posts, an other content that are:
- pornographic in nature
- patently obscene or offensive to a reasonable person
- disparaging of other individuals or groups
- libelous, defamatory, or malicious.
SYSOP has final authority on whether or not these guidelines have been violated.
In addition, all of the guidelines set forth in the rules of this site in terms of flamebaiting, posting unsupported accusations and assertions, name-calling, and so on also apply. Content that violates any of these guidelines is subject to deletion and the party responsible is subject to sanction up to and including permanent banishment from GLOAMING.us. |
| Do the blogs support trackbacks? |
| Yes and no. The blogs do support trackbacks—the trackback URLs are listed under each blog—but be aware that trackback listings are all deleted three times each week. This is unfortunately necessary because of the massive amount of trackback spam that has (and continues to) be targeted at this and other sites that allow their users to blog. Please, do feel free to find the nearest trackback spammer and tell him exactly how you feel about this. |

| The discussion forums include an area specifically for bloggers. In this area, you can find formatting tips, advice on how to make the blogs work better, and ask any questions you want related to the blogs. |
